The UK base rate has been cut by the bank of England to 1.5%, the lowest in its history. It is hoped this will alleviate the slump in the economy, with GDP falling 1.5% in the last quarter of 2008.

Oil prices have begun to climb again after falling to $40 a barrel in December 2008. Oil production had been cut by Opec in the last quarter of 2008, although this seemed to have little immediate impact on price.
